This reaction leads to the <strong>breakage of molecular chains<\/strong>, a <strong>loss of molecular weight<\/strong> and a <strong>loss of polymer properties<\/strong>, especially <strong>toughness<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Hydrolysis is a slow process at room temperature, <\/strong>but can be <strong>rapid at high temperatures<\/strong>. This is an <strong>irreversible process,<\/strong> as even drying the material will not restore its original properties.<\/p><p>Some applications require <strong>materials with special properties to resist hydrolysis<\/strong>, such as <strong>tanks, pipes and ducts,<\/strong> where the polymer is in contact with <strong>hot water, steam or water-glycol<\/strong>
