Stroke is currently the <b>second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability worldwide<\/b>. In Spain, between <b>110,000 and 120,000 new cases<\/b> are recorded each year, with a particularly high incidence among women.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Every year, World Stroke Day aims to increase global awareness regarding prevention, detection, and the necessity of rapid action when the first symptoms appear.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"7\">More than <b>25% of those affected pass away<\/b>, and <b>two out of every three survivors<\/b> suffer from long-term consequences, often resulting in disability. Therefore, <b>awareness and swift intervention<\/b> are fundamental to saving lives and reducing the impact of a stroke.<\/p><h2 data-path-to-node=\"8\">What is a stroke?<\/h2><p data-path-to-node=\"9\">A stroke occurs when the blood flow to the brain is interrupted:<\/p><ul data-path-to-node=\"10\"><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,0,0\">In the majority of cases (over 80%), it is caused by a <b>blood clot<\/b> blocking an artery (<b>ischaemic stroke<\/b>).<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"10,1,0\">In other instances, it is caused by the <b>bursting of a blood vessel<\/b> (<b>haemorrhagic stroke<\/b>).<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-path-to-node=\"11\">Both types are <b>medical emergencies<\/b>. Recognising the symptoms and <b>acting immediately<\/b> can make all the difference.<\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"12\">Key symptoms of a stroke<\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"13\">Taking fast action begins with knowing how to identify the warning signs. The main symptoms include:<\/p><ul data-path-to-node=\"14\"><li><p data-path-to-node=\"14,0,0\">Sudden loss of strength or numbness in the face or limbs.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"14,1,0\">Difficulty speaking or understanding speech.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"14,2,0\">Visual disturbances (double vision or sudden loss of vision).<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"14,3,0\">Loss of coordination or balance.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-path-to-node=\"14,4,0\">An intense headache, different from any usual pain.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-path-to-node=\"15\">If any of these signs appear, <b>call 112 (or 999\/112 in the UK\/EU) immediately.<\/b> This activates the <b>Stroke Code (C\u00f3digo Ictus)<\/b>, a healthcare protocol that ensures priority and specialised medical attention at the hospital.<\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"16\">Every minute counts<\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"17\">During a stroke, <b>two million neurons are destroyed every minute<\/b>. The window of time to receive treatment is extremely limited; thus, <b>rapid action can mean the difference between a full recovery or permanent disability.<\/b><\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"18\">It is estimated that <b>one in four people will suffer a stroke in their lifetime<\/b>. For this reason, information and prevention are essential.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"19\">This is why at NUREL we want to remind everyone that being informed and acting quickly saves lives.
