Polyamide 6 and Ultra-High Barrier Polymers for Pasteurized and Retort Packages
Our specially engineered polymers are designed to withstand pasteurization and retort processes, advanced methods that use high temperatures and pressures to eliminate harmful microorganisms and extend the shelf life of packaged food. By choosing these packages, you not only extend the shelf life of your food but also preserve its nutritional value.
Promyde®‘s range of polyamides offers sustainable solutions for containers undergoing pasteurization and retort treatments. These polyamides excel in heat resistance, mechanical performance, barrier properties, and provide stunning brightness, making them ideal for maintaining your packaged food’s integrity.
Additionally, NUREL offers Enoxite®, an ultra-high barrier material that can withstand pasteurization processes when used in multilayer structures. This advanced material ensures your packaging maintains its quality and safety.
Copolyamides for Retort Packaging and Sterilization
Retort pouches and vacuum bags are crafted from flexible laminates capable of enduring the thermal sterilization process. This process involves subjecting the packaged food to temperatures between 116°C and 121°C (241°F to 250°F) under high pressure, effectively eliminating common microorganisms for product safety.
NUREL offers a wide range of copolyamides for BOPA film extrusion that resist retort treatments while maintaining their transparency, brightness and sealing properties, as well as mechanical strength. These copolyamides offer sustainable advantages, such as reducing polyamide usage in multilayer structures by 50% and providing monomaterial solutions to facilitate recycling.
Retort packaging finds widespread use in Ready-to-Eat Meals, Pet Food, Sauces and Condiments, and Baby Food.
Barrier Packaging for Pasteurization
Packaging for pasteurized foods should possess key properties like heat resistance (60°C to 85°C or 140°F to 185°F), seal integrity, and effective barrier properties against moisture and oxygen. Typically, bi-oriented PA film is used in the outer layer, especially for vacuum packaging. When an excellent oxygen barrier is required, Enoxite® ultra high barrier, can be coextruded between two layers of PE to protect it from moisture.
Pasteurization packaging is suitable for various food products, including dairy products, fresh juices, sauces and soups, effectively extending shelf life while preserving taste and nutrition.
